Pat on the Back from The Mumpreneur Awards 2010

I am delighted to have reached the semi-final stage of The Mumpreneur Awards 2010; and would like to take this opportunity to wish all the finalists the best of luck at the forthcoming prestigious awards ceremony in September. These awards recognise the great achievements of the UK's mumpreneurs, and inspire more women into business.

The first round of judging saw 302 entries whittled down to just 8-11 entries per category, before the second round of judging took place. Only the best of the bunch were then put forward to the second round, and these were people the judging panel believed would be suitable candidates for the finals. Being chosen as one of these suitable candidates meant we performed outstanding enough to have made it through to the "semi-finals" stage.

This recognition is proof of the continuous hard work and dedication undertaken... in the words of the judging panel 'We really feel this is an achievement to be proud of.....thank you again for taking the time to enter the Mumpreneur Awards with such a fantastic entry!'

The Mumpreneur Conference 2010 is taking place on September 18th 2010 at The Heart of England Conference Centre.

I was dreading the big three zero! So decided I would throw myself a little party with a fun theme of Pirates and Princesses, time for the adults (and the children) to take on this popular party theme!

It was a great evening, lots of fun seeing everyone dressed up, from men coming as princesses to women as pirates, an absolute treat to have all my close family and friends around me to celebrate my 30th birthday party in style!

Orders are flying high.......and my little boy turned 5!

Apologies for not blogging for so long, but I have been so busy with sales and John Lewis orders that I cannot believe its almost the end of April! Hopefully I am back on track now and can keep you posted on recent news and what's happening with me and Illustrate My Name behind the scenes.

The picture above is from this morning, parcels all complete and waiting for the courier....... and thats just a days worth of my own orders! With a system now in place, I hope to have a little more time to dedicate to my blog, networking and developing and promoting my website. Here's hoping! This is such a challenge doing everything single handedly still!

This month has also seen my little boy Theo turn 5 , which saw my brain turn into Toy Story, Ben 10 and Star Wars for the two weeks of the Easter holidays! Obviously I enjoy all the toys, DVDs and games equally as much as Theo! Especially with Toy Story 3 on the horizon, I am like a child waiting for Christmas, I think that will just about make my 30th this year - he he!

Theo's first trip to London was on the cards this weekend just gone, where we went to see Oliver at The Theatre Royal, which was throughly enjoyed by Theo and in my own opinion 'outstanding performances by all'. We also had a very welcoming and enjoyable stay in The Westbury, we visited Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, the Covent Garden Market was great, lots of fun food tasting! and not to forget Hamleys!!!!

A Very Proud Moment For Me!

I still can't quite believe it..... my artwork range displayed within the nursery room set at John Lewis Oxford Street!

I am over the moon, thrilled and extremely proud that the artwork range fits in perfectly within the adorable room sets on display in the six chosen John Lewis flagship stores. The Princess/Fairy artwork, displayed above, looks exquisite.....and yes, I am smiling like a cheshire cat from ear to ear!

The initial response to the artwork has been very positive, which I hope will continue. I am now looking forward to seeing the artwork range within the forthcoming 'John Lewis Nursery' catalogue.... will keep you all posted. Right I better get back to illustrating these orders.....

Supplying My Artwork to John Lewis -

Britain's Favourite Retailer!

I am extremely proud to finally be able to announce that I have secured a contract to supply my own personalised artwork range to John Lewis. This is a very prestigious and exciting time for me personally and for my business. This achievement and opportunity clearly recognises my continued drive and enthusiasm towards my artwork range, and my business.

Not only is the chosen artwork range available online at John Lewis Direct; but within the coming weeks, six of John Lewis flagship stores will feature the artwork within their nursery room sets. These chosen stores will include: Oxford Street, Kingston, Peter Jones, Trafford, Blue Water, and Edinburgh.

Why do we celebrate Valentines Day?

Yes once again we are counting down the days until 'Valentines Day' is upon us; the question I ask is why do we celebrate valentines, what is the real reason? The history for this day?

Saint Valentine's Day is an annual holiday on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for one another by presenting gifts, and sending greeting cards. The holiday first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

So.... there is the truth behind Valentines, and the history why we celebrate this day. I am sure the majority of you can agree to some extent, that it is yet another money grabbing opportunity which businesses do take advantage of. I must admit personally, we always decide to either cook at home, or go out for a meal not on the 14th, why pay double the price at your favourite restaurant, just to get a rose and a menu printed on red card!!!!! Obviously like most women I do look forward to something romantic, whether that be flowers, chocolates or a little surprise of some kind - lets just wait and see!

One great deli locally to us is the Cornucopia Deli in Eynsham, a few years ago my husband completely bowled me over with a beautiful three course meal at home, which is obviously easier around the children, once they are tucked up in bed! He did let on straight away that he had visited our local deli, much to my surprise it was such a romantic gesture, very much appreciated with some nice wine to accompany it. The food comes all prepared with cooking/heating guidelines, so absolutly anyone can make this into a gourmet delight! Especially busy mums and people busy with work - a nice enjoyable treat, check out your local deli, I am sure you will admit its worth a try!

My New Nephew Eddie x

I am over the moon and delighted at the arrival of my beautiful nephew Eddie Jack Thomas, who has landed himself with a great birthday arriving with us on New Years Eve!

Little Eddie weighed 7lbs 10oz and is simply adorable! Now how can I have decided on a perfect gift..... well that was easy for me, as I illustrated him a beautiful personalised picture and placed it in his nursery for when he arrived home!

As 2010 begins for Illustrate My Name, I am personally very excited that I can announce some exciting news in February for myself and my own illustrations!!!! On top of this will see our first catalogue being published by March/April 2010 in time for the ever popular christening season. Theo's First Christmas School Play

I just could not resist showing off my 4 year old son Theo in his Squirrel costume, which is for his first ever Nativity play (I know, not sure where the squirrel comes in - but very excited to find out next week!)

And yes its very handmade, but equally I was quite impressed with my first attempt at making a costume for him, especially the tail. I must also admit it took me 3 attempts to get the ears 'just' right, after lots of 'one is bigger than the other', maybe I was being a bit fussy - Just a very proud mummy moment for me and very much looking forward to the performance x

The Countdown to Christmas is on - Only 52 Days Left!

Here we are again, either counting down or not to the BIG day of the year (well in my opinion anyway!). I must admit I am a bit of a big kid when it comes down to Christmas, having two young children to prepare the Christmas magic for is no excuse for me, I have always been the same! I just love everything 'Christmas'

Now it is especially exciting to watch the magic and excitement through your children's eyes, especially my 4 year old, last year was amazing let along his little face this year! Creeping down the stairs to see if 'he' has been or not, takes me back to my Father leading us girls down the stairs, saying 'I don't think he has been girls' and then the pure excitement when we burst through the living room doors to find presents, presents and more presents!

Christmas time is very important time to see friends and family, and I love that it brings everyone close together! The children love all being together and its what makes it my favourite time of the year. Growing up we always went to my Grandparents from Christmas Eve for a whole week, we never went home, even though we just lived around the corner, it was a complete holiday! The memories are still very close to me now - I really miss my Grandma she always made it so so special x

I have had such a headache and continue to do so with the recent actions and news of Royal Mail's postal strikes, just having heard another will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week - whatever next?

Obviously if your customers are prepared to pay a little more then this is the way forward. It is so easy and simple to use, set up an account, and follow the online route to send your parcel to your customer in time and tracked by a reputable courier.

I have had the most efficient customer service from this company, not just through their site but also asking lots of questions and receiving immediate response, also I was upgraded as a customer, so it really is worth taking a look. I just had them come to my studio and pick up 4 parcels, hassle free...... :o) now who is smiling

MAKING A NAME IN GIFTWARE!

It is always nice to hear about us in the press, not to mention when it is local recognition! It really has made my day and such a joy to read such a lovely piece about Illustrate My Name (and myself, pictured above) in this weeks Oxford Times InBusiness Magazine

I have always felt the importance of being acknowledged and recognised locally as a big step in the growth of any business. For Illustrate My Name to get coverage like this will not only tell everybody about the business, but also you get to see the person behind the business; and although lots of hard work is involved in the running of my business, alongside bringing up my two children, it is a huge achievement to be operating such a successful online gift store, making lots of people smile with the beautiful gifts on offer.

I am also extremely proud that I design and produce the illustrated artwork myself, these being the Illustrated Framed Names and Silhouette Art, which are in fact our top seller and how the business began for me. Trick or Treat Memories & Halloween Personalised Gifts

Not everyone will enjoy the spooky part of October, but as a child my memories are still very well remembered! From trick or treating in the dark with friends, then coming home to hot dogs and treats, whilst counting out the sweets and treats we had managed to get from our neighbours. Obviously in this day in age its very apparent that it is becoming more unsafe and not liked to actually go trick or treating. Our village will put a pumpkin outside if they want to participate, so at least the children can go to some homes! Its a bit disappointing for us though in a village with no street lights, we don't have any visitors down our lane, but there is a close in the village where the torch lights and pumpkins can be seen!

I believe the fun is to have a small get together (well for the children), ask them to invite a few friends, or family round and do some yummy halloween treats, not forgetting decorating the house a little with spooky spider webs and lots of candles (up high if your children are young). And seen as though this Halloween 2009 falls on a Saturday, all the more reason to have a little party! Then when the children are tucked up, get a scary movie on, with some nice nibbles and wine and have a scream!!!!

After spending the morning at the Taste of Summer Event at Blenhiem Palace, I walked away with one amazing find! The Gourmet Chocolate Pizza Company!!!!!!!!!! Honestly, everyone should take a look, what an amazing gift for someone, or centre piece for a party, making a delicious and striking pudding for your guests. We took just one slice away and my son, niece and nephew enjoyed it very much for pudding today. Lights, Camera, Action........

Its really nice when our suppliers decide to take the time to commission photo shoots for their products, recently one of our suppliers has taken the time to picture their products in some great lifestyle shots! I think this pictured 'B' was probably the order I placed at Christmas time for a customer who just fell in love instantly with them and the lovely choice of fabrics!

Our beautiful Letter Cushions are a huge hit, and are the first product I added to Illustrate My Name alongside my very own back in 2007. They were my inspiration that out there were many talented individuals and businesses who could add to the delightful gifts on offer to our customers. How Does Your Garden Grow?

After a beautiful day and the sun being so very kind to us in Oxfordshire, the question I am asking you all is.....How does your garden grow???

Whether you are green fingers mad or not, it was only last year when I was pregnant with Max that I really got the itch to make my garden somewhere I was proud of, well if only for the summer months!! I am still learning, with lots of help from family, who have given me cuttings and helped with showing me and telling me what works and what doesn't, much better than reading a book, you get to appreciate your garden and spend time with family who teach you something, its never too late to learn!

Also a very special moment for me earlier this year was when my late Grandma's tree, which my Granded asked me to have in my garden, decided to bloom. I had a tear in my eye when I first saw it, I do believe my Grandma is watching me and it was so beautiful, no wonder it was her favourtie, I am still trying to find out what its called, will upload a photo soon, see if anyone knows. I am so lucky to have something that is so special in my garden, not to mention our beautiful Wedding Cake Tree which my Mother in Law bought my Husband and I as a wedding gift back in 2004! It has not only travelled to 3 different houses, it now resides in a beautiful spot outside my kitchen window! Adorable, and very special, reminding us of our special day!

This afternoon I felt it about time, as I have been slacking with the garden, to get down to the roots! So the gardening boots came out, my beautiful shabby gardening gloves (what I would do without them) made a spectacular appearance, and I seriously got down to the weeding! And don't I know it now (back is aching!), after an afternoon of trying to weed, around my boys either wanting mummy or trying to join in, I feel I have achieved something and now its time to hit the garden centers tomorrow for some inspiration!

Don't get me wrong there is nothing established about my garden, but its growing and as with everything in life, it has to start somewhere, just like Illustrate My Name did for me back in 2006, when I started believing in myself to make a success of my own business working around my first child, and now 3 years on with 2 children, I am so thrilled to offer a great children's boutique, offering an array of personalised children's and baby gifts to the entire world. Only last week I sent products to Malta and Australia!

Are you an Adventurer or Not!

I think we all have some kind of an adventurer in us, whether you are the kind to travel somewhere different and go on a simple adventure walk, or thinking back to some child hood books I read about amazing adventures, do you tend to try and find hidden places and remember the great adventure films like the infamous GOONIES!

Even now when we go away I play games with my son about being on an adventure, and having boys its always makes them smile, especially if we find things, my son was really into the WATER HORSE last year so when down by the coast near a rock pool, we found an egg shaped rock, well we kept it for a week in a bucket of water, as he was convinced he had found CRUSO! Bless him, we had to pretend he had hatched and gone back to the sea! Its great having Children, seeing the world through their eyes is the most fascinating thing to ever happen to me x

Food Glorious Food

Oh I am so so excited that our new kitchen extension is almost complete, after buying some beautiful accessories over the weekend, polka dot baking trays and vintage scales, I can really feel a Nigella Lawson moment coming on. Just check out her wonderful recipes and ideas! Just love her, she is an inspiration to me and my kitchen!

I am just about to prepare an easy version of a Goats Cheese and Butternut Squash Lasagna! Yes vegetarian too, and so yummy, even my boys like it cause I also add some slices of sweet potato! Its so easy, just replace the layers of mince with thin slices of goats cheese and chunks or slices of butternut squash. At least dinner is prepared and I can get on with all the other chores! For a more detailed recipe try Waitrose. I have tried this and it really is a treat for all the family to enjoy.

I have to make a confession that my favourite cheese is Goats Cheese and I must use it in so many recipes, I know not the best for the waistline, enjoying cheese, but if its time to indulge then cheese it is for me, especially with some olives and a glass or two of wine :o)

Children's Interior Ideas | Decorating your Child's Room | Little Extras for your Child's Room | Kids Rooms

I think I could honestly change my son's bedrooms every month, there is so many lovely themes and ideas out there. I am glad with my first son we opted for the traditional nautical theme, now 4 years on, its still all in keeping with him, he hasn't outgrown it at all, so thats one good thing for the pocket, especially if you spend a bit more on the bedding which we did from Laura Ashley, its still in great condition.

He absolutely loves the little paper boat bunting hung around his wardrobe, not to mention some lovely keepsakes I have picked up from maritime museums and gifts shop down by the coast. Beautiful lighthouses, boats and ropes to complete the look. Just perfect like him!

I always say its great to go for off-white or pure white walls, with either a boy or a girl, then you can go totally mad with the extras you add to the room. Adding special things that are important to your child, like photographs, personalised items (great to get them recognising their name) and even their own choice of poster, I have given in to the Dr Who and Ben 10 poster, on the back of the door is my trick! Oh how mean am I! He he

My youngest who is now 8 months is still waiting for his room to be complete, due to having an extension and him being moved around a bit, we wanted to wait till everything was complete before making his room a real adorable place to be! I have gone for a more contemporary look, lots of bright/vintage looking bits against off-white walls. His bedding is my favorite of all, the Cath Kidston mini cowboy range! Not to mention the fabulous alphabet wall art stickers which are bright and funky, and some little extras I have picked up like 'laugh' hooks (above), vintage disney pictures framed, everything of which is all ready to put in place, just once the extension is complete! Not long now Maxie!

I haven't had the luck of being able to decorate or even think about a little girl's room! I suppose thats where I compensate with my business, as I love all things pink for little girls and their rooms, so I like to make sure my range has something for everyones taste and various themes. Only yesterday a customer requested she didn't like pink for her daughter, so she went for my very own Silhouette Art in lilac and purples, I really believe in offering options and different colour choices to suit your child's bedroom or playroom, so always ask if there is something you can't find or see within our range.

Customers can say the nicest things!

I am so busy moving Illustrate My Name into my new studio tonight, so only time for a quick blog. Are you a working from home mum? Are you working from home around your children? I am indeed an official mummy working from home, and although very hard at times, I try and enjoy it as much as I can. I think one fond memory will be when I first went into labour with Max back in August last year, I was actually processing orders on my iPhone as we drove to the hospital - nothing like a working mum my husband said!

And there I was today working from home for just an hour, around my two little ones and I had the pleasure of receiving a lovely email from Amanda Wring: "Hello, Firstly what a superb website full of many lovely goodies!!! I can feel a real spending spree coming on!!! "

Amanda Wring who is from Bristol, emailed me today and then we went on to talk on the telephone, it was comical and the usual story, the minute I decide to pick the phone up, my two boys decide to cause chaos! Amanda totally understood, as I was so apologetic that there was commotion in the background, she went onto tell me she is also a working mum and said I think most mums these days are working from home around the children. Thanks Amanda for being so understanding and shopping with us today. She went onto email me this evening, which bought a smile to my face:

"I will pass your website about amongst all my friends. Many thanks and please do not worry about being a working mummy, its better than you having to be stuck in an office block all day - its nice you create and source such lovely things to sell, well done you! My Best Friends Wedding - What a film!

It was so lovely to sit back and enjoy 'My Best Friends Wedding' last night, which was on TV, a real chic flick if ever you are with the girls or just need a good girly film! It bought back wedding memories, as I have been lucky enough to experience some lovely weddings over the last few years.

My own best friend had the most amazing winter wedding in November 2007 in Broadway, just outside of Cheltenham. The day was very magical, with fairy lights decorating the beautiful venue, not to mention christmas trees and real burning fires completely set the scene! And being her bridesmaid was a true honor.

Then my brother and sister-in-laws wedding in Spain last October, was very intimate and a beautiful summer beach wedding! Little touches like a table just for the children, with their own little boxes on with gifts and things to do, and we all got a lovely gift too, it was a special day for the family, not to mention my little Max who was only 6 weeks old and had his first trip abroad to share in the special day.

And going back almost 5 years was my own special day just outside of Oxford at Eynsham Hall, it was a sunny/rainy day in July, but even a few showers didn't change the day for anyone, it still is one of the happiest days of my life, on top of the arrival of my two sons! This is us pictured below x

My Baby Won't Sleep!! Please Help I am Deprived of Sleep

I think every mother at one point or another will be pulling their hair out why their baby isn't sleeping and why it seems everyone else's baby is! Well my first child took over a year to fully go through the night and although to some people that probably seems a long time to have the 'all through the night routine' its not compared to others I have spoken to. My second child who is now almost 8 months, is still waking just once, which of course feels so tiring but actually is quite quite normal at this age.

I personally would recommend Gina Ford Books to anyone expecting or anyone who has just had a baby, read the Contented Baby Book, as early as you can is the key. I read the book when my first son was 3 months, although eventually it worked, lots of sticking to the routines of course, I felt I was a little late in implementing the techniques.

Having read the book and seen the outcome, I decided to try again with my second child, but this has been so difficult, firstly when you have a toddler you just cannot stick to some of the techniques like controlled crying, as you don't want a toddler and the your new baby awake at 2am!

So how impressed was I to find out Gina Ford is launching a brand new book called 'Contented Baby with Toddler Book' - she is a genius! Although its not out to buy until July, so my little one will be almost a year, I will still have a read! And definitely recommend to people who are expecting their second child. We all do things in our own ways but she is a realist more than preaching what is right and wrong. Focussing on ways and means that may or may not work for you and your family environment, not to mention your child, they are all so very different and mothers instinct is always right - remember that.

So, what is your favourite penny sweet?

One thing when we are all grown up is we never grow out of penny sweets! Everyone must have a favourtite, I think mine has to be the really chewy flat strawberries (which I think were always 2p). Thats what I love since being a child, penny sweets are still penny sweets, and although I am not one to encourage sweets for my children, it is a real treat when we pop into a shop where the infamous penny sweets are, that I let my son have a paper bag and choose 10 little sweets!

I had a little go at being creative and made these lovely sweet cones, out of some adorable vintage wrapping paper, so easy to fill with someone's favourite penny sweet and tie up with a beautiful bow! I had some time out with my son on Saturday and we made these and we added them to a birthday present as a little extra for a family member, and yes it was a grown up because we all love sweets for a treat! I have been busy making lots more to take to my next events and fairs I visit in and around Oxfordshire. I am going to place them in an ice cream cone tray so people can pick their favourites and buy for either presents or just a little treat on the day!

Myself and a very good friend, Laura Hardwick worked extremely hard in organising and promoting the recent 'Yummy Mummies' event which took place in Oxfordshire on 26th March 2009. We were lucky enough to get some great press coverage locally prior to the event and with our own hands promoted the event around West Oxfordshire to get as many mummies through the doors. The event was held between 10am till 2pm, allowing mums of older children to come along while their children were at school and the younger children to enjoy the crafts we had on offer!

We had a huge table for easter crafts, ranging from easter cards to easter puppets and more, as well as The Pottery Place attending which allowed the children to paint easter cups and more. I am so please The Pottery Place are designing a selection of exclusive ceramic products from cutlery sets to name plaques, all made exclusively for Illustrate My Name.

As this was our first event, myself and Laura were delighted to see a huge amount of people come through the doors, who not only enjoyed our own products, including personalised children's gifts and toys. A selection made by our very own hands, but also on the day visitors got to enjoy health care products from Forever Living; fair trade jewellery and accessories from Sago Jago and much more. It was great to have Studio 8 Photography at the event, they displayed a range of their contemporary family photography and also took photos on the day. The venue we chose was Carterton Community Centre which is a brand new purpose built community hall, with its own cafe area, we received lots of positive feedback from the day about the event and the venue itself. Our next events our in the pipeline, we are hoping for a 'Summer Yummy Mummy' event and a 'Winter Yummy Mummy' event so we will keep you posted.

With Spring in the air here at Illustrate My Name, it puts a smile on our faces to know that the most popular times for christenings has arrived! From now until late September there is an evident trend that people decide to have their child's christenings, its always nicer when the sun is shining, or should we say when we expect the sun to be shining and garden parties and outside parties are becoming more popular. Within this extensive marketplace we love bringing beautiful Personalised Christenings Gifts to your fingertips!

Having been trading now for over 3 years, we have seen a common trend in sales for Christenings between these months. What with the current financial climate on top of us all, we are becoming more and more selective of what we spend our pennies on! DAY FIVE - Personalised Children's Bunting

Half way there on bringing to you the Top Ten gift ideas for personalised gifts for children and babies! Today's feature is Personalised Bunting, from letter bunting to beautiful hand knitted bunting, there are so many types of personalised bunting out there to choose from. Not just your ordinary bunting from high street stores, but lets find something unique and different that cannot be found everywhere.

Add that extra special touch to any child's bedroom or playroom, or even a great piece to use in the garden when entertaining for someone's birthday (pictured above). With some adorable bunting handmade in the UK you can't go wrong. Why not be creative and give it a go by making your own!

The Easiest Way to Make Fabric Bunting

You can make fabric bunting using scraps of left over fabric, perhaps some adorable pieces of your children's old clothes (recycling stuff you would usually throw away) or an alternative is cheap cotton sheeting - a small amount really goes a long way if cut very carefully! For lasting bunting use pinking shears to cut out your triangles, then either use the drinking straw sewing method or sew a simple channel in the top of each flag. An easy to make guide can be found here.

or Get Creative with Knitting

Enjoy some creative time and perhaps if you have younger children you can teach them to knit, I remember so well my grandma teaching me and I still know how, its a special memory of mine! If you can knit then help your little one knit some little triangles and neatly piece together with some wool. Some lovely handmade knitted bunting all made by yourself to give as an easter gift or birthday gift for anybody to keep. We have an adorable range to offer but also believe its fun to get creative and have a go yourself, like I said a memory of mine that will never be forgotten, give your little ones some 'making' memories to cherish.

Get that Beautiful Summer Look! EARLY

With the warm weather approaching fast, and the thought of shorts and vest tops appearing out of the closet, its time to do a few quick things to perk up the way you look and feel, get that sunkissed feeling NOW!

1) EXFOLIATE - Make sure you do a full body exfoliation, best once a week, but if not time, then once a month should be fine. Get a body scrub pack and spend some time pampering yourself, get your partner or close friend to do your back, its important you don't forget that. Once exfoliated, use some extra special body cream to really make you feel special.

2) SPOIL YOURSELF - Pedicure and Manicure! Either go and book some time in at a local beautician or spend some time giving yourself a proper Ped and Man! In the summer people see more of our feet, so nice to have them all healthy and well looking!

3) WATER - Drink pleanty of water, this is vital all year round, but the hotter the weather you will dehydrate quicker and its great for your skin, nails and every part of you!

4) LOOSE WEIGHT - Make sure you diet is a healthly planned one. Summer is the best time to shed some weight. As our appetites are not the greatest when the weather is warmer, spend time preparing some extra yummy salads, even with BBQ season already upon us, prawns on skewers, or salmon steak in foil! Not that I would encourage too much sunbathing, as its bad for you skin and aging! BUT for those of you like me, who don't have time to spend sunning yourself, then just do the next best thing. Splash out on some holiday skin products, Johnson's Holiday Skin is the best for my skin colour, it builds up a gradual SAFE tan, that doesn't look like its out the bottle! But remeber to wash your hands throughly, you don't want streaky hands! I will say this product has never left my body with streaks! So 10/10

6) TAKE CARE - Make sure you have fun in the sun, but always take care and always apply sun tan lotion everyday, especially to your face, nose and ears, these areas are constantly in the sun so be careful. And remember the higher the factor the safer you are, it doesn't affect your body's tanning process, just protects you for longer!

7) ENJOY - Whether you have kids or not make sure your outside enjoying the sunshine, its great for a mental boost and physically, you will notice how much more awake and fresher you feel from being in the fresh air.

New Year! New You!

Tips to help you achieve your resolutions

As 2007 dawns upon us, so does the thoughts and aspirations of a new you! Whether your resolutions are to lose weight, get fit, or simply change your lifestyle here are some simple easy steps to helping you to stay on track!

1. Losing Weight: Join a weight loss club, the enthusiasm and motivation you gain from others around you will really help your self-confidence and goals! My friends and I, after having our children, all joined as a group, made it a night out, weighed in, and then had a drink somewhere, something healthy of course! And always gave one another goals, like who would lose more the week after. Existing friends and new friends will help you in your battle to lose a few pounds or more!

2. Getting Fit: Even if its a simple stroll or walk, make an effort to do something physical a few times a week, either meet a friend for a walk or jog, or even a game of something, I must admit I find a bit of competition gives me more motivation to do something. Badminton is good as its fun and physical, but you can take it easy too! Go on go book a badminton court for you and a friend, or you and your partner! New mums out there why not go on lots of buggy walks and check out your local buggy clubs they are great for exercise and meeting new people in your area!

3. Lifestyle Changes: Quit smoking, cut back on alcohol, control your finances..... all the things which will change you and your lifestyle, even if its not something people can see its what’s inside that counts. You are the only person who can achieve lifestyle changes, make plans of how and when you will change things, its hard for me to give advice on smoking as I never have smoked, but from seeing my father recently quit, its been 8 months now, I reckon anybody can if you put your heart to it!

If its alcohol, just limit yourself to no alcohol in the week and a few at the weekends, I know how easy it is to get home from a hard day at work or a hard day with the children and open a bottle of wine, but again its just controlling it! There are some great healthy teas out there now, which are good for your body and also will make you feel better the next day, a lot fresher and brighter than after a few glasses of wine!

We all promise to sort our finances out, save money or cut back on the clothes and accessories, but just plan ahead and be in control, whether its you or your partner who controls your finances, just make sure you have your month by month planned, whether you have meals out, or weekends away, or just peoples birthdays, at least then you can work out extra expenses and where you can cut back! One great idea whilst the sales are still in town, grab some great bargains for presents for people, or just buy well in advance rather than leaving things to the last minute, or end of month when extra cash is low! Little things like this really do make the difference!

Well good luck with these resolutions, which may or may not be yours this year! But whatever your resolutions just remember you are the only one who can really achieve your goals! Live life to the full but remember be healthy, keep fit and plan ahead!

SIMPLE ESSENTIAL CHRISTMAS CHECK LIST

Not long to go now, is everyone ready?

Every year I say to myself, I will be prepared early! But Christmas always creeps up on me and before I know it, its Christmas Eve and I still have presents to buy, food to prepare! I am sat here today even with a list as long as my arm of what I still need to buy, cards I still need to write! How about a simple essentials checklist to make sure the small touches are not forgotten! And you still have 4 days to go, so I suppose you could say we are slightly in the lead this year!

This list will add to the magic to put a smile on everyone’s faces!

1. Make your own Table Cards, just simply make some cards on the computer with the name of the guest, little clipart pictures, or their photo on and then on the reverse a joke perhaps! Always a nice personal touch for your Christmas table!

2. Make sure the camera and camcorders are fully charged and close to hand on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Before you know it you will have all eaten your Christmas dinner and no photos will have been snapped, make sure you ask a member of the family to do some pics, you will be too busy with the food, drinks etc!

3. Music, don't forget that essential Christmas music to be on in the background, we all like a bit of Wham and Mariah to get us in the Christmas spirit! Either get the CD ready or download on to your IPOD well in advance!

4. Pre-Christmas Tidy Up! We all do it, have a 'spring clean' just before, make room for presents etc, make sure your ready and tidy for guests, well do this the day before Christmas Eve (Sat 23rd), then it won't take away any of the magic on the Eve before Christmas! In fact I started doing some cleaning just last night!

5. Magic Touches for the children - Don’t' forget the ringing of the bells when they are in bed! Also the hoof prints in the lawn, and please don't forget to nibble the mince pie left for Santa! Although you never know he may do all that himself!!!!!!

6. I know it sounds silly but bear in mind everyone is using their oven at the same time and although marginal it may effect the oven's performance (very slightly), just make sure your checking things regularly! Keep a close eye on the roasties!

7. FINAL point, make a list of when you’re cooking everything and where, in what way, order, it makes it so much easier, especially if you’re a virgin to Christmas Dinner cooking like me!

LASTLY, enjoy the festivities and remember to tell the world after Christmas about your experiences, I am sure you will all hear about mine!

The Magic of Christmas!

Do you believe? I certainly do, I believe in the magic, and all that goes with it! I remember as a child, I was a little scared of the big man, me and my sister used to lie in bed whispering "is it him" over and over again, any slight sound would make us hide under our quilts, but with excitement and apprehension combined!

I think nowadays children grow up far too quickly and become wise to what they think isn’t real! When deep down if you truly believe it will always be magical. Now that I have a son and the magic for him is just beginning it brings back all those wonderful memories of how special Christmas is, not just for the magic and the presents but the real reason!

I think we all get consumed by the massive media explosion of Christmas that the little things like why are we celebrating and what’s so special about Christmas can be lost, especially in children! I recall my parents reading me The Nativity Story as a child and watching animations of Baby Jesus and understanding, whereas I really do think this has been lost in recent years. Its only now that I want to educate my son about the magic, but also the real reason we celebrate, and that its not just about presents!

Remember to look up to the stars on December 24th and truly remember why we are all here celebrating!

Everyone has their own beliefs, and that’s what makes each of us individual, I just hope a little bit of my belief will be handed down to my Son and then his children in future years, I really do hope the true magic of Christmas doesn’t fade away like so many things nowadays!

Are your children watching too much TV?

Having a 20 month old son, I am beginning to get slightly concerned he may be turning into a television addict! I have read numerous reports on TV and the effects of this on family interaction and dominating family situations which in this day in age is becoming more evident.

Communication is a strong factor in childhood and parenthood, children learn there first verbal skills at home and if there is a strong presence of TV then this may effect the concentration levels your child develops as he/she grows. Not to mention the advertising and images they are exposed too.

My son seems obsessed with Disney/Pixar films, its one after the other he will request, whether its Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc or Toy Story, he has already become engrossed in them at such an early age! It was only the other day I came in to the living room to find him hiding behind the sofa at the beginning of Monster Inc! It made me think I need to introduce some TV control!

Where are the days when families used to play board games together or the days when TV was a luxury, nowadays it's a common denominator in any household. Praise does go to a number of kid's television channels, in the UK especially, CBeebies is fantastic and very educational, programmes such as Number Jacks and Razzledazzle are just a handful of great programmes for your children.

Most sensible households will acquire a delicate balance between watching TV and interacting, playing, and exploring with the family. I think the more we understand TVis an issue the more families will become aware of the consequences. Little things like, no TV when you eat as a family, so that communication isn't lost, an hour of TV a day during holidays, make sure your children get outside as much as possible and enjoy outdoor activities, rather than becoming sofa babies so young! It's better to start the control of this at an early age, once they can argue with you, these times will become more difficult and demanding.

Terrible Twos

Toddlers get real bad press in regards to the talk of tantrums, whining and the terrible twos. The truth is, most of the time they're amazing, kind and full of fun. How do we cope with the bad times and make the most of the good?

As a mother I find it best to keep positive, its easy to let it all get you down, especially when its in the most embarrassing places. Just the other day my son decided to have a huge tantrum in the middle of a busy shop, its so difficult to be patient, as you can feel all the eyes digging. But I was able to try and control him even if I did receive a few kicks and screams. The best way I have found is to ignore it after its happened, children of this age don't know wrong from right, especially after the event, so if you are going to say they are wrong or discipline them its best to do it at the moment they misbehave and not dwell on it any longer.

Understanding what your toddler wants will help overcome these difficulties, especially before they can talk and communicate to you, my son has developed quite early and talks all the time and asks for what he wants. Its amazing that within a few months we are communicating properly, he understands me and vica versa! Even if sometimes all he can say is 'chocolate' over and over again, I don't give in, they do play tricks and believe me they start very young picking up on everything! Including knowing your weaknesses!

Your child is dependant on you, you are the greatest person in their lives, remember, although these times seem never ending, these years are over too quickly and thats when we wish we could turn the clocks back. Being their everything is a great feeling, enjoy it, as these times wont last forever either.

What’s expected of new and expectant fathers?

Having experienced being pregnant and the expectations I personally had of my partner, it has now made me ask myself a huge question “Are all us women the same, do we expect too much?”

We have all seen the movies, being pregnant, mother and fatherhood, being in love and wrapped up with the joys of parenthood, it all appears so perfect, but real life is not like this, well it sure wasn’t for me!

Expectant Dads – A word of advice!

One of the biggest issues I would say is for you men to actually stand back and realise your partners life has already changed, whereas you can still do what you want, when you want, she is already adapting into motherhood and the emotional and physical changes that are taking place. I know it will appear daunting to believe your life could change so dramatically, and the person you thought you knew inside and out seems to be changing in front of your eyes!

As a mother and having experienced the changes within myself, I never for one minute thought my partner would be suffering or needing any support, I was too busy worrying about the new arrival, weighing up all the things that needed to be done, moaning about him still doing everything as he used too and not realising what it was like for me! When in fact he was actually going through some major changes too, not only the daunting aspect of fatherhood but also watching his partner change so much.

There is no simple answer, I don’t have the answer, but the most important thing is to talk, the more you talk about your feelings the more likely your going to understand one another.

For all you pregnant women out there – look at the signs, perhaps you need to realise your partner may be experiencing exactly the same as you but is being too strong to admit it! He also needs to know how important his role is, not only now but also for the first stages of your parenthood journey together. It’s not all about us women! And don’t be worried to say your finding it difficult, its quite normal, even now before your baby arrives.

For all expectant fathers – Please have patience with your partner, her life has already changed, and her emotional and physical self needs you more than she ever has! Remind her how beautiful she is and how much you love her, I know it sounds corny, but sometimes that’s all we need! Oh, don’t be surprised to get the "how can I be beautiful when I look like this" reaction! Or even her throwing something your way! Patience is the major factor; you are at the beginning of a long journey together!

Patience for one another and the ability to talk about everything will honestly get you through the hard times. Two of you have made this new life, so now is the real time to stick together!

Lets not forget the joys you have to come, they sure outweigh these difficult ‘high expectation’ times. Not to mention the fun you will have when kitting out their nursery, or buggy shopping, and then eventually the day will come when you meet your baby face to face, and from personal experience nothing will beat it! Well until the next one arrives of course – but that won’t be for a long time for me, if ever!

Post Baby Weight Loss!

Now you have had your baby, its a shame we can't give birth to the extra pounds gained whilst pregnant! Its a delicate balance and the key is to shed those extra pounds slower, then they are more likely to stay away!

Talking from experience, after my son, I was distraught that the extra weight didn't just fall off, I thought a couple of months, then it got to 4 months and thats when I decided to do something about it - infact if it weren't for someone saying I still had my baby tummy (not a nice thing to say to a sensitive new mum though is it), it possibly could have been longer.

I decided to go down the route of eating a healthy balanced diet, this included 3 large meals per day, which almost a year on is still my eating regime! This has to include at least 5 portions of fruit and veg per day, lots of water, make a chart with 8 glasses, tick them as you go! Record everything you eat, and really try and avoid crisps, biscuits and chocolate. Dont' get me wrong I love my chocolate and still do, but its a balance and having self control.

Another key to shedding the weight is to try to avoid alcohol, thats the killer, especially beer, lager or any alcho-pops! I love my wine so limited myself to a small (125ml) glass each evening with my dinner, that was like my pudding too! Not the best advice but we are all different and to wind down after a day with your new born or toddler, a chilled glass of white usually does the trick!

An average day:

Breakfast: Bowl of ceral, skimmed milk, piece of fruit or small glass of fruit juice

Mid-morning snack: piece of fruit or handful of nuts/raisins

Lunch: Jacket potato with 2 tbsp of low fat cream cheese or houmous, heaps of roasted vegetables and loads of salad, try balsamic vinegar as its a great dressings and no fat at all.

Afternoon snack: low fat chocolate bar or biscuit (Tip: weight watchers ones are great!)

Dinner: Salmon steak with tbsp of sweet chilli sauce, plus some extra chilli's on top, if you like it HOT (don't forget chilli's are known to speed up your motabolism) then a few new pot's and heaps of veg, lots of variety!

And WATER WATER WATER, its the key! Don't give up, it won't be long till your a yummy mummy with a flat tummy again! He he - I must admit I didn't go down the exercise route, only cause I never had time, but as my son has grown he sure keeps me fit, as he never stops and neither do I!

What better way to start your christmas shopping than a FREE GIFT!

Its really funny how we all try and prepare for christmas early, especially when children are involved, as there is so much to think about, first are the onions pickled, then is the wine muled, then the most important, have you the Father Christmas outfit, then of course the hoof prints on the lawn! Whats in a child's name? How important is choosing the right name for your baby?

Who doesn't spend hours sitting with a 'baby names' book, or search every search engine under the sun for the best baby name generator! I certainly did, I actually spent hours searching, and still struggled to decide until very last minute! Its an overwhelming experience enough being pregnant and knowing (or not knowing) how your life will change, let alone thinking of the right name to suit your special arrival!

It was real funny as my husbands favourtie names made me cringe, and I am sure that some of my choices did the same to him! But eventually you come to that important decision, just in time I hope!

I hate to mention particular names, but just the other day a friend of mine told me about their friend who had just called their baby boy ZIGGY! I thought why?? But when you come to think about it, any name, no matter how traditional, biblical or just different, becomes PERFECT.
